PhD Studentship

The Values of French Language and Literature in the European Middle Ages is pleased to announce one three-year fully-funded PhD studentship, to begin on 1 September 2016 and to be held in the Department of French at King’s College London. The student’s primary supervisor will be Professor Simon Gaunt, with Dr Simone Ventura as secondary supervisor.

The studentship will pay home/EU fees (currently £4,600) and a maintenance allowance equivalent to an AHRC studentship (currently £16,057). Applicants are expected to have a first degree demonstrating competence in medieval and modern French at the level of at least a 2.1 and would normally be expected to have an MA (or to be in the process of completing an MA) in a relevant subject, or equivalent, to the level of at least a Merit. Applicants also need to meet the standard English-language entry requirements for King’s College London, and should note that theses must normally be written in English (only under exceptional circumstances are PhD students in the Department of French permitted to write theses in French).

The student will undertake a programme of doctoral research on a topic that falls broadly within one of the projects three strands: for further details see more about the project. Candidates wishing to discuss an application informally may contact either Simon Gaunt or Simone Ventura and should submit an application to simon.gaunt@kcl.ac.uk by midnight on 29 January 2016 consisting of the following:

  • A research proposal consisting of no more than 2 sides of A4
  • A Curriculum Vitae that includes details of all academic qualifications
  • Two references: you should ask your referees to send these independently to Simon Gaunt by the deadline

The successful candidate will subsequently be asked to submit a formal application for a place on the PhD programme at King’s College London if s/he has not already done so.

The project student will be a full member of the project team and be expected to take part in team meetings, seminars, and conferences. S/he will receive training in working with manuscripts, will be provided with his/her own laptop, and will be eligible for the project’s travel funds.
